Whilst I agree with your general argument (being an emacs person myself) I
think it is worth pointing out two reasons for using ved (yuk) over emacs
(yipee):

1 The pop11 debugger will not work fully under emacs. This is real pain, if
  like me, you find a debugger a really useful tool. If you are the type who
  wears their under-pants outside their trousers, then don't worry about it.

2 If you are teaching or demonstrating Pop11 to students, then they will be
  using ved. Trying to help them with the subtleties of the language in a
  different editor can confuse them, not to mention me! You are hence forced
  to develop a certain level of expertise with ved in order to help them use
  it. 

Look on the bright side though, when you do leave ved and go back to emacs,
you are reminded how nice it is...
