Subject:compressed files

Has anyone done any work making ved read compressed files. I would like
to be able to compress all my help, ref, doc and teach files to save space.
Optionally, I would also like to compress the library files as well.

I have started to look at this and have successfully used vedpipein to
execute zcat on the file and read it into a buffer, however I was wondering if
there were some core routines I could alter based on file extension to read in
compressed files invisibly. All the routines I have looked at so far in the
pop sources appear to be at too low a level to alter and I haven't found the right
high level routine to alter. Presumably, if the right routine were altered all
files in the distribution could be compressed and relevant routines such as help
could work unaltered.

Has anyone done any work with tags support as well ? I intend to start writing
a tags package shortly, if anyone has such a beast already I would be interested
in looking at it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated ;-)
