As ever, the documentation is always a good place to start. Try reading
REF * EXTERNAL and * DEFSTRUCT.
For one "real world" example might want to look at the source code from
<http://www.cogs.susx.ac.uk/users/adrianh/popcci/> which links to an
external C library, but this was written some time ago and there may well
be better ways of doing it now (indeed, knowing some of my code there were
probably better ways of doing it then :-)
