I tried again on the machine running redhat 7.1 (installed July 2001
and running almost non-stop since then as my internet gateway). This
time it worked perfectly.

The first time rebuilding startup.psv produced an error, but when I
tried again later this did not happen.

Maybe there was some intermittent hardware fault manifesting itself.

My installation scripts could be further improved.

I'll announce the changes separately.
