I had previously made available a VED based news reader, LIB VED_GN, for
reading net news on a news server using NNTP. In order to avoid messing
around with sockets I simply used a telnet process set up by Pop-11.
However it had a problem in that sometimes the remote telnet process
timed out and this could lead to errors attempting to close a broken
pipe, and because sysclose had a bug the error would repeat.
In order to prevent this I have made ved_gn close the telnet link if it
is unused for gn_idle_interval seconds, which defaults to a 10 minute
interval. This seems to have solved the problem. If anyone
wishes to have a copy of this program it is available by ftp from
Birmingham via this address (using mosaic or lynx. otherwise translate
in the obvious way for ftp):
ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/dist/poplog
in the files
auto/ved_gn.p
help/ved_gn
There seems to have been a problem since Poplog V14.2 in that setting
vedediting false temporarily no longer stops things being displayed on
the screen, and this slows some things down. I'll try to include a fix.
(It's only a problem on a slow line, or if you don't use XVed.)
