A response was posted via pop-forum, but did not get forwarded

The info you need is in Chapter 3 (XVed Resources) of REF XVED.

I had forgotten that I had the following in my .Xdefaults file,
which may be of some use:

    XVed*font: 10x20
    XVed*labelFontList: -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-p-*-*-*
    XVed*buttonFontList: -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-p-*-*-*
    XVed*textFontList: -b&h-lucidatypewriter-bold-r-*-*-20-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
    XVed*defaultFontList: -b&h-lucidatypewriter-bold-r-*-*-20-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
    XVed*BorderColor: white
    XVed*Foreground: gray95
    XVed*Background: gray5
    XVed*statusForeground: white
    XVed*statusBackground: black
! The next one simplifies Xved icons
    XVed*UseXVedIcons: false
    XVed*geometry: 80x30+10+10
    XVed*highlightBackground: white
    XVed*highlightForeground: black

The following is a fairly recent addition to XVed:
If you want to limite the maximum number of windows visible
on the screen you can do something like this:

    XVed*MaxWindows: 8

you can still have more than that number of Ved files open.

The REF file says:

Whenever a window is to be created for a new or existing file,
and there are already MaxWindows windows, the last file on
vedbufferlist that currently has a window will have its window
destroyed. The new window then replaces it, in the same screen
        position.
