Thanks very much, Chris, that looks like a good line of enquiry and I'll
pursue it.

A bit further down the page, it says of some other functions that you
turn them back off by replacing the final 'h' in the escape sequence for
turning them on by 'l'.  Since the insert mode sequence also ends in
'h', maybe the same thing will work.

But I'll bet ved is capable of coping with insert mode, given the number
of terminals it has been made to run on.  Maybe it just isn't being told
that the mode is on.

Did you try running ved in your console?  Do you get the same effect
that I do?
