I think this problem has been sorted with later versions of OpenLook and/or
POPLOG, at least it does not afflict me. Essentially the difficulty is that
fonts are provided by the X-server (your DEC machine) while presumably
POPLOG is running on a SUN and has been configured to use OpenLook (the
default at least for earlier versions). OpenLook required its own fonts,
being designed for somebodies concept of aesthetics rather than
functionality. Poplog V14.2, which you must surely have around in U.Rummage
(if not 14.5) gets over the problem. Otherwise find a good hacker and
relink with Athena...
