The most likely explanation is some obscure interaction between your
window manager and xved. Since you do not say which window manager you
are using (kde, gnome, some sub-option?) it is hard to be sure what the
problem might be.
I never use either of those: only ctwm. It is small, fast, robust,
pretty general, easily tailored to suit my requirements, and I don't
have problems of mouse/keyboard focus.
I suppose that if XVed does not work with gnome or kde then one day
something should be done to fix that.
I presume you don't have this problem with any other X utility, apart
from Xved.
