I've been resisting the tempation to say this, but the above comment has
finally broken me!!

About 11 years ago, when Ben Rubinstein was developing the original
Poplog Window Manager, I tried to pursuade him that a really good thing
to do would be to make the server understand a subset of pop11, with
built-in graphical operations etc. This would have had the advantages
that you could compile and test your display code within poplog
(downloading just the low level graphic routines as commands) and when
it was working you just download the whole thing and it would whizz
along. Seemed a neat idea. Sadly, Ben went for a simple byte code
mechanism instead.

Ah well....
