IIRC, back in the bad old days when people had to connect to
the internet using a modem on a phone line ;-), there was a
choice between PPP (point-to-point-protocol) and SLIP (serial
line interface protocol).
I don't think either protocol was specific to phone lines
(I'm just being pedantic here). Whereabouts in the different
layers of protocol they fit, I'm not sure.
