[To reply replace "Aaron.Sloman.XX" with "A.Sloman"]
I tried replying via posting to pop-forum but something is wrong
with the mail->news gateway, so I am re-posting comp.lang.pop
Sorry if you get this twice.

Put program.p in one of the directories in $popcomppath, which,
by default is set in $popcom/popenv to include
:$poplib:$poplocalauto:$popautolib:$popliblib
but can be extended in your .login or .profile file, or in
$poplocal/local/com/poplog
Then
pop11 program
or
pop11 program.p
will compile the file.
If it's not in $popcomppath give the full path name.
See REF SYSTEM for more detail.
You can also give a pop11 command starting with a colon between
double quotes, e.g.
pop11 ":compile('foo.p');foo();"
Or if it takes too long to compile, build a saved image, as is done
for eliza and xved in
$popcom/mkeliza
$popcom/mkxved
