Many thanks, Aaron.

I'll install

I installed v15.53 and followed the instructions in install.txt

If I remember correctly, the reason I didn't use the BHAM CD was to
avoid motif--i.e., I don't have motif on my linux box; I had problems
installing it; and except for sim_agent, I don't think I require motif
for what i want to do, e.g., I prefer regular ved to xved. My home
(=work) network has various computers with several OS's (Mandrake
Linux, OS X, and various flavours of Windows) and I've had various
hardware problems in the last few months so I've been trying to keep
things simple. (It's been like rebuilding a boat while keeping it
afloat.)

However, I notice from your message that motif is not required with
1553a.tar.gz .

I'll go ahead and install one of the packages and read the
documentation which I'm sure will do the job.

Thanks again.
