I have not had exactly that problem, but I have found bizarre
colours turning up in images generated by Pop-11 at times because
too many colours had been hogged by other things, including
netscape, gv, etc..
The only cure then was to re-start the X server, which can be a pain
if you are in the middle of too many things.
