Look at the "vision" subdirectory of popcontrib

    $popcontrib/vision

especially lib/rc_image, contributed by David Young at Sussex.
The help file
    $popcontrib/vision/help/rc_image
starts

| LIB RC_IMAGE is intended to provide a convenient way of displaying
| grey-level images from POPLOG under X-windows, using * RC_GRAPHIC.

There's also a teach file with examples that you can run
interactively.
