Have you tried looking at the online HELP IM file? This is how it
starts off

| Immediate mode provides a convenient mode of interaction with a POPLOG
| language in the VED buffer, as an alternative to "Load Marked Range"
| (see HELP *LMR).
|
| E.g. in "immediate mode", POP-11, Prolog or LISP commands or procedure
| definitions may be typed in and will be evaluated "immediately", with
| program output appended to the VED buffer.

It also works for ML, and if you use the ENTER sh, or ENTER csh,
commands you can use immediate mode to interact with the Unix
shell (though not commands like "mail" which take over the
interaction). See HELP IMCSH, HELP IMSH

If you feel happy with the use of marked ranges (See HELP MARK) and
compiling/loading a marked range (See HELP LMR) then you may prefer
that to immediate mode. Tastes differ.
