Subject:ved_gn (Ved newsreader) improved
From:Aaron Sloman see end for email address
Volume-ID:980110.01

Some time ago I made available LIB VED_GN a Ved-based newsreader
implemented in Pop-11, which uses LIB UNIX_SOCKETS and works with NNTP
news servers, unlike the program LIB VED_NET, circulated with Poplog
since about 1987.

I have found that some news servers start getting very slow when the
news reader is getting header information about groups with large
numbers of messages.

I have therefore made ved_gn reset the connection after every 100
message headers has been read in, and this seems to solve the problem.

The program and help file and other related files are available from the
Poplog ftp directory at Birmingham:

    ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/dist/poplog

See the following files

    ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/dist/poplog/auto/ved_gn.p

    ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/dist/poplog/help/ved_gn_setup
        HELP VED_GN_SETUP

Whether used with VED or Xved this news reader can be driven via
the menu interface also available in the ftp directory.

Note for sussex users: the above files are already available
in ~aarons/

At Birmingham they are already installed in $poplocal/local/ for poplog
users.
