Here's an article that explains how to do that. It worked for me.

I previously reported on comp.lang.pop that attempts to link poplog so
that the X facilities worked with Lesstif when Motif was not available
had not worked.

Thanks to help from Julian Clinton I have now fixed this. The details
are described in
    http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/poplog/bugfixes/BUGREPORTS

If you already have linux poplog and lessstif you can install three
modified files then relink for motif. It should then work. The files
are

http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/poplog/src/master/C.x/x/pop/lib/Xm/xmTextWidget.p

http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/poplog/src/master/C.x/x/pop/lib/Xm/xmTextFieldWidget.p
        Install those two in
            $usepop/pop/x/pop/lib/Xm

http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/poplog/src/master/C.x/x/ui/lib/S-poplog_uiS-filetool_xm.p
        Install this in
            $usepop/pop/x/ui/lib

You can the relink poplog to use motif or lesstif with the following
command (as described in HELP NEWPOP):

    $popsrc/newpop -link -x=-xm -xpw

It will relink, then rebuild the standard saved images, indexes to
documentation files, etc.

Alternatively you can fetch the complex linux Poplog tar file for
linux
with motif or lesstif from
    ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/dist/poplog/new/linuxmotif1553.tar.gz
or
    http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/poplog/new/linuxmotif1553.tar.gz

Then unpack and install.

Information about other facilities available and othere versions of
poplog is in
    ftp://ftp.cs.bham.ac.uk/pub/dist/poplog/freepoplog.html
or
    http://www.cs.bham.ac.uk/research/poplog/freepoplog.html

If anyone tries the new version with lesstif, please post problems
(or successes!) to comp.lang.pop

WARNING:
We have found that trying to set the minimum heap size on Linux
poplog,
using popminmemlim causes an error. Simply use popmemlim, and give
a high value (e.g. 1024) to popgcratio, to force the heap to expand
quickly when garbage collections occur. See REF popgcratio.
